Air Abrasion is a technology that allows us to remove early decay with a gentle stream of air and powder.  This shotless drilless dentistry is a great way to introduce children to dentistry.  With children not happy about shots or the drill, this alternative has been well received.  

Some examples of how this works are seen as follows:

   

Here is an example of two teeth that have small cavities in them.

   

Air abrasion is used to remove the decay.

   

A stain is used check and be sure that all of the decay has been removed from the teeth.

   

Notice how only the decayed portion of the tooth has been removed.  Air abrasion saves good tooth structure by not having to remove anything but the decay.

   

The teeth are restored with a tooth colored material.

Some anterior teeth can also be restored with air abrasion.
